“Being zipped into the Prayer Tent felt like a portal. At times a nest, a womb, a heart, all intimate spaces that felt simultaneously like my own, and yet universal. Not just of myself, but of humankind, Ancestors and Spirit beings past, present, and future. In the mere act of sitting, my presence completed the circle as the wind outside shook the fabric of the paintings, and the Mothers spoke to me, each in turn, making this sacred experience part theater, part meditation, part memory, part future imaginings. “Most of my life my prayers have been to a male figure. Though in the past few years I have been broadening that concept of the Source of all things, I still don't have many images of a divine mother figure. Because of this, I wondered what the prayer tent would be like for me, and if I would be able to connect...At times I sat and made prayer bundles, other times I felt tears welling up. When I found myself able to let the tears out over what I have held and what I have let go, I felt surrounded by a circle of nurturing, caring women. It reminded me of being in a room as someone is giving birth, so much of the support is unspoken and felt in the witness and presence of those surrounding the mother. “I am a trans woman. My inner spirit is utterly, completely, and profoundly feminine. Yet I had to live the first 50 years of my life as male. This, as you can well imagine, has caused me profound pain, anguish, and interior turmoil. As I said, this did not vanish the instant I left the tent. But I did experience the following. First, an acknowledgment that my pain is real and no attempt to cover it over with platitudes. Second, a realization that this is part of a feminine awakening we are all experiencing and is clearly evident in our society today - it's what motivated you to put up the tent in the first place - but with birth comes pain. Third, and perhaps most importantly, the knowledge that I am not suffering alone. Not just the divine mother, but plenty of other spirits alongside her, they "get it". In some fashion they understand what it means to have such a core component of one's identity suppressed and hid for so long. But over and above all that, a strong sense of spiritual union and bonding which I know can carry me through anything, because I am not alone - it is no longer "I", but "we". But not in the bad sense of losing one's individuality, but experiencing it even more intensely."
