Macha~Mabon
The ancient Earth Goddess, Macha, holds the place of Mabon at the Fall Equinox upon the Celtic Wheel of the Year.
Her most well known story tells of the shift from an honoring of the womyn’s mysteries and sacredness to the investments of patriarchal pride, in which she is forced to race the king’s horses while fully pregnant with her twins.
She assists us in re-connecting with the aspects of self—whether our voice, our truth, our creativity, our wildness, our instinct, our power—that may have gone into hiding. She represents a time of mid-life when we may need to fight for both the younger generations and fight for our own recovery. She empowers us to enter the cave of becoming so that we can integrate towards wholeness and wisdom.
My process of painting Macha was deeply confronting and healing for me. Her deep vulnerability and unwavering gaze inviting witness to the feminine power of embodied Presence and connection to the life-death-life mysteries that the feminine consciousness knows expresses a Power that is in service of these mysteries rather than the domination/control dynamics of power defined by the over-culture. She becomes a fiercely loving companion into the terrain of one’s own Cave.
